Squaraine dyes that are the subject of this research have a donor-acceptor-donor chromophore characterized by sharp and intense absorption bands in the near IR region and may form liquid crystals. Squaraine dyes can be synthesized by condensation of electron-rich aromatics, such as N,N-dialkylaniline, phenol, benzothiazole and pyrrole with squaric acid.  2,4-Bis[4-(N,N-dialkylamino)-2-hydroxyphenyl]squaraine dyes show interesting thermotropic liquid crystal behavior, they can form H- and/or J-aggregates upon thin film formation via spin coating before and after thermal annealing treatment. Two derivatives of 2,4-bis[4-(N,N-dialkylamino)-2,6-dihydroxy-phenyl]squaraines were being synthesized.  Comprehensive photophysical and thermal characterization, such as UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and differential scanning calorimetry is reported. In addition, their aggregation properties were investigated both in solution and the solid state.
