Aldol reactions of acetophenones with benzaldehydes typically yield condensation products, chalcones. However, a significant yield of the �-hydroxyketone can be isolated when 2'-hydroxyacetophenone is treated with benzaldehyde. Variations in the solvent have been shown to further promote formation of the partially saturated �-hydroxyketone. In this presentation, results from kinetic investigations of the reaction by H NMR analysis will be presented. Purification by recrystallization of both the �-hydroxyketone and chalcone products will also be discussed.
