We have performed the synthesis and characterization of two different negative-photochromic compounds that contain a quinoline moiety. Upon irradiation with visible light (? = 470nm), these compounds undergo an intramolecular reaction to form spiro structures, which may thermally reverse to their open-ring structures. These types of compounds may serve as a general template for the future design of negative-photochromic compounds.
