[2+2] Photocycloadditions of oxygen-tethered alkenes to aryl ketones have been  previously carried out in the presence of ester and amide substituents.   In this study we have examined similar cycloadditions of alkenes tethered to the aryl ring by an ester or amide linkage.  We  will discuss the versatility of this approach in formation of complex  ring systems.
