Lanthanides and actinides have many applications in modern chemistry. While working with these elements, it is often necessary to complex them to prevent toxicity. The ability to chelate cationic f-elements from nuclear waste using hydrophobic carbamoylmethyl phosphine oxides (CMPOs) has been described in the literature. Our strategy is to prepare multidentate CMPO-containing compounds to enhance this binding ability by taking advantage of the chelate effect. Current efforts toward the synthesis of these compounds will be described.
