Glycodendrimers are macromolecules that are spherical in shape and characterized by multiple sugar-terminated ends, an organic core structure, and an ability to exhibit multivalency. Multivalency is understood as the simultaneous attachment of multiple binding sites on one entity to multiple receptor sites on another, and is hypothesized to increase as the numbers of ends on a glycodendrimer are multiplied. For this purpose, our research involves increasing the valency of multivalent, dendrimer core structures as the foundation for building sugar-terminated glycodendrimers.  In the present study, an octavalent carboxy-terminated core was synthesized through divergent pathways. This new octavalent core will now provide a scaffold for the coupling of a sugar to each terminus. Addition of the sugar may be limited by steric strain between the closely packed carboxy ends, so further research will investigate the advantages of either directly coupling the sugar to the core, or alternately using an intermediary linker we have previously constructed in the synthesis of the octavalent glycodendrimer. The resultant glycodendrimers can then be further modified, than evaluated for potential biological activity.
