Glycodendrimers are large, sugar-based polymers containing an organic dendrimer core with carbohydrates appended on the surface. Glycodendrimers can be synthesized in a variety of ways, resulting in molecules with extensive branching and a wide range of physical properties. These properties allow glycodendrimers to exhibit multivalency. Glycodendrimers are being investigated for their potential as anti-viral agents, where strong interactions with the virus may prevent viral entry into a host cell.This study focused on the synthesis of a trivalent dendrimer core. This core was then coupled to the disaccharide cellobiose under mild aqueous conditions.  Once the reaction conditions are optimized, they will be applied to larger glycodendrimers, with the ultimate goal of developing novel anti-viral agents.
