There is an increased interest in understanding the toxicity and rational design of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) for various applications in recent years. Such efforts warrant reliable and bio-friendly synthetic methodology for GNPs with homogenous sizes and shapes, which is currently challenging.  In the present study, an environmentally benign, bio-friendly, single-step/single-phase synthetic methodology in a buffered aqueous solution at moderate temperature is introduced. The resulting GNPs in the size range of 10-120 nm are highly monodisperse, stable, catalytically active, place exchangeable, antibacterial and find application in nanoparticle based in situ detection of many biological agents.
