We have recently developed copper catalysts for the borylation of aryl halides including electron rich aryl bromides under mild conditions. Thus, palladium can be replaced by inexpensive copper in this important process for preparing arylboronate esters. Experimental studies with an NHC-Cu-boryl complex as well as DFT calculations suggest a mechanism for the catalytic reaction. Interestingly, phosphine ligands seem to provide more active catalysts for this process than do NHC's. Possible reasons for this will be addressed. In addition, we have also developed copper catalysts for the borylation of both primary and secondary alkyl halides. Finally, we have investigated the binding of an NHC to B2pin2, a process previously reported by Hoveyda to be responsible for NHC-catalyzed beta-borylation of unsaturated ketones. Highlights of these results will be presented.
