Stimuli responsive nanolatexes and triblock copolymers based on an imidazolium bromide ionic liquid monomer are excellent stabilizers for graphene in water. We present optical data indicating complete or nearly complete exfoliation is obtained by sonication at reduced temperatures. Initial coatings of waterborne graphene dispersions onto nanoporous alumina produce well-defined thin coatings yielding high electrical conductivity in plane. Dilute and concentrated dispersions of graphene are rheo-optical fluids and exhibit significantly constructive light scattering when graphene sheet orientations are de-randomized by hydrodynamic shear fields. The anion stimuli responsiveness of the imidazoium based stabilizers is also exhibited by these graphene dispersions. Iodide induced gravitational sedimentation kinetics are reported. This stimuli responsiveness is used to induce 2D graphene self assembly, and the formation of macroscopically visible 2D aggregates are illustrated. This stimuli responsiveness is also illustrated to be a simple method for producing controlled deposition coatings out of solution onto planar supports, and the formation of thin film electrodes suitable for display technology is illustrated.
