The selective activation of primary C-H bonds in methane and higher hydrocarbons remains a significant challenge in catalysis today. In this talk two catalytic approaches will be described. First the use of Fe-containing zeolites for the selective oxidation of methane will be described, and the use of Cu2+ in arresting the over-oxidation of methanol to formic acid and CO2 will be discussed. The second approach will describe the use of AuPd nanoparticles in the selective activation of methane and toluene. The methods of preparation and the reaction mechanisms will both be described.
