Ion and lipid organization at the air-aqueous interface is studied using interface-selective spectroscopy and two-dimensional surface imaging. Mono and divalent salt solutions with lipid and fatty acid films is presented. Binding of monovalent cations to surfactant headgroups is discussed from vibrational sum frequency spectra as well as macroscopic organization of the films. Competitive surface adsorption is observed with small soluble organic molecules and lipids using Brewster angle surface imaging clearly indicating potential pore formation of lipid monolayer films. Application to biofilms and atmospheric aerosol surfaces and reactivity is discussed.
