Laser desorption/ablation of liquid micro-jets has been used to examine ion density distributions at vacuum-liquid interfaces. Specifically, 193 nm laser excitation of aqueous solutions containing either NaCl, NaBr or NaI produced and removed H+(H2O)n and Na+(H2O)m.   The H+(H2O)n distribution at low salt concentration can be modeled using a localized ionization/Coulomb expulsion model. Modeling the Na+(H2O)m distributions required a contact ion/Coulomb expulsion mechanism and the presence of I- and Br- at the vacuum interface. Laser irradiation of aqueous salt solutions containing doubly charged ions (i.e. SrCl2, BaCl2, CaCl2 and MgCl2) was also examined and only solvated M+ or MOH+ are observed, These are produced via charge transfer and ion-electron recombination processes.
