Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important roles in human pathophysiology; however, there are few selective and biologically-compatible chemical tools for its detection. One major challenge for H2S detection is differentiating hydrogen sulfide from other reactive sulfur compounds, including thiols, which typically maintain high biological concentrations. Additionally, traditional H2S detection methods typically lack the requisite spatiotemporal resolution for live cell or tissue-based experiments. The development of chemical tools for the fluorescence detection H2S offers the benefit of real-time detection of this important biological molecule. This presentation will highlight our most recent work on developing sensitive and selective fluorescent probes for studying hydrogen sulfide in biological systems.
