Metal organic frameworks, (MOFs) have attracted much attention as microporous materials for applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, and many other fields. This research aims to understand the adsorption processes of several MOFs on the molecular level using structurally sensitive spectroscopy methods. In this work, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectroscopy studies on MOF materials with labile metal-bound solvent molecules are presented. XAS data acquired in situ during heat activation of these MOFs reveal changes in local coordination geometry upon solvent removal. Raman results obtained under similar activation conditions are also presented. For each MOF, a composite picture of the proposed activated framework structure is derived from the combined XAS and Raman analyses.
