The unique structure of zirconia (ZrO2) clad with hydroxyapatite (HA) could enhance the mechanical properties of the both biomaterials. The as-described composite micro-powders were successfully prepared using hydrothermal-deposition in-situ stepwise reaction method. The XRD and TEM were used to characterize the phase, morphology and size of the resulting powders. The composite bio-ceramic modules were fabricated by means of moulding and thermal treatment of the composite powders. The collective characterization results show that the as-synthesized powders with nanosize are composed of well crystallized tetragonal phase ZrO2 core covered with HA shells to construct the core-shell structure (n- ZrO2/HA). The mechanical properties of the corresponding bioceramic module are much better than that of the individual. With the increase of HA content from 0 to 100%, the as-clad HA shells become thicker gradually, but the bending strength and the mean Vickers hardness become lower from 183 to 61MPa and 781.75 to 131.76MPa, respectively.
