There is currently interest in new high oxidation state Mn clusters because of their relevance to many areas such as nanoscale magnetic materials, bioinorganic chemistry and oxidation of organic compounds. Polynuclear manganese clusters can behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) if they possess a combination of a relatively large ground state spin (S) and a negativeIsing (easy-axis-type) magnetoanisotropy. The anion of 2-hydroxy-methylpyridine (hmp-) has proved to be one of the most successful ligands in this field due to its versatile chelating and bridging nature. In the present study, we have explored manganese clusters that result from the use of hmpH in combination with halides and pseudo-halides hoping to discover new families of manganese clusters. This has turned out to be the case. The syntheses, crystal structures and magnetochemical properties of the obtained complexes will be described.
