The oligerimerization of the cationic dye methylene blue can be studied in aqeuous solution  by properly varying the concentration and measuring the UVvis absorbance  for the entire set. The data can then be modeled using  equilibrium-restricted factor analysis, which is a powerful mathematical  tool that leads to the molar absorptivity curve for each distinct  absorber that exists during the course of the titration, and also yields  the association constants for dimerization, trimerization, etc..  Several models for the data will be compared and contrasted in order to  highlight the power and limitations of such methods to characterize in situ ensembles of molecules that potentially aggregate with each other.
