Prior work demonstrated that polymer surfaces modified with polyurethanes containing P[(3FOx):(C12)m:n] polyoxetane soft blocks (where 3FOx is a trifluoroethoxy side chain and C12 is the quaternary ammonium containing side chain) confer non-leeching bacterial contact kill. However, further research showed that these fluorous/ quaternary surface modifiers slowly surface phase separate with a precipitous reduction of biocidal effectiveness over time. New work has identified  improved modifiers with a fluorous side chain terminated with �CF2H. High contact antimicrobial kill results at low modifier content. Much improved temporal stability has been shown by zeta potentials and testing against biocidal challenges. TM-AFM revealed novel morphologies for a modified aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane.
