Carbonylimidazole derivatives have been established as an important and versatile class of acylation reagents. In the presence of pyridinium salts, carbonylimidazole derivatives have been found to be highly reactive under mild conditions. These reactions are thought to involve both Br�nsted acid and nucleophilic catalysis. This mode of activation has been applied to the synthesis of oxazolidinones, as well as esters and amides.
