For high-performance supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries (LIBs) applications, we have designed and synthesized a series of graphene sheets (GSs)/metal oxide composites by combining sol-gel and low-temperature annealing processes, including GSs/RuO2, GSs/MnO2, GSs/Co3O4, GSs/Fe3O4, GSs/TiO2 and GSs/Li4Ti5O12. All these composites show a greatly improved capacity, cycling stability and rate capability compared to solo graphene and metal oxide, demonstrating the synergistic effect between GSs and metal oxide on the improvements of electrochemical performance. In addition, we have fabricated GSs/PANi and GSs/cellulose paper-like electrodes by in-situ anodic electropolymerization and vacuum filtration, and further assembled GSs/cellulose electrodes into polymer supercapacitors. The supercapacitors show high capacitance and excellent cyclic stability. Importantly, no performance degradation was observed when bending. Using graphene foam/metal oxides as electrodes, we also demonstrated a lightweight and flexible LIB with high rate performance and energy density.
