Biomass like wood chips, switchgrass and other plant residues are first converted to synthesis gas (syngas, mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) through gasification process using air, oxygen or steam. Syngas is produced through a downdraft gasifier in Pace Seed Laboratory of Mississippi State University. The syngas from the gasifier contains about 18 % hydrogen, 21 % CO, 12 % CO2, 2% CH4 and 47% N2. Carbon Encapsulated Iron Nanoparticles are synthesized by several different techniques. The nanoparticles are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These nano- scaled iron catalysts was used as the catalysts for upgrading wood syngas to liquid fuels, they showed high activity for FTS process.
