Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) copper-iron based catalysts were prepared. An ethylene glycol (EG)-methanol mixed solution of metal nitrates was infiltrated into the void of the colloidal crystal template (CCT) of a monodispersed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sphere. Heating initiated nitrate oxidation of the EG to produce metal glyoxylate salt. Further heating converted the glyoxylate salt to metal oxide and decomposed PMMA which produce the 3DOM metal oxides. The morphology, element composition, crystal structure of the 3DOM catalysts were characterized by FESEM-EDS, TEM, XRD, and XPS. In addition, the catalytic performances of the catalyst were evaluated in a half-inch tubular reactor system using syngas (mixture of CO and H2. etc). The obtained liquid phase products (alcohol and hydrocarbon) were analyzed by GC-MS and the gas phase was analyzed by GC. The results showed that this 3DOM catalyst had high CO conversion rate, high alcohol selectivity and C2+ alcohol selectivity, and high yield.
