We developed non-aqueous electrolyte for Li-air battery. With a spectrophotometric method, Li2O2 solubility in carbonate (propylene carbonate, PC), nitrile (acetonitrile, ACN), sulfoxide (dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO), and ether (dimethoxy ethane, DME) were determined to be 0.1 ppm, 0.3 ppm, 0.3 ppm, and 1.3 ppm, respectively. Discharge capacity of sealed beaker cell using protected anode, glassy carbon cathode, and each electrolyte increased along with the Li-2O2 solubility in the electrolyte solvent, except for the case of DMSO. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed that DMSO reacted with oxygen reduction product to make dimethyl sulfone. Li-air full cell using protected anode, Pt/C air cathode, and 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in DME was tested. With controlling discharge capacity, current density, and temperature (60oC), we could get the 100 cycle capacity retention of Li-air full cell.
