Our work involves the use of aerosol based processes to generate novel morphologies of catalytic materials. While traditionally, the use of surfactants is to template mesoporous materials, we will demonstrate that the templating can be disrupted by design leading to novel structures. For example, we will describe the synthesis of metal containing particles with an amphililic shell structure of a silica nanolayer and a carbon nanolayer. Similarly titania hollow structures can be designed. We will also show that the aerosol process can be used to control metal placement in carbon based supports. Catalytic applications of such materials especially in the design of environmental catalysts will be described.
