Recent studies have shown that some jet fuels oxidatively degrade, yielding insoluble material, under both long-term ambient storage and thermal oxidative stress within engines. These studies also suggest that brief exposure to temperatures within the engines at ~100 C� results in the formation of oxidative deposit. To rationalize the formation of these oxidative deposits, the revised soluble macromolecular oxidatively reactive species (SMORS) mechanism has been proposed. In addition, the oxidative reactivity of jet fuel has been characterized through the (SMORS) methodology both at ambient temperatures and at ~100 C�. Using GC/MS, SEM/EDS, and NMR, data has been generated to test the SMORS mechanism. By characterizing the deposits formed under these conditions, a better understanding of the SMORS mechanism can be achieved. This information will prove to be significant in the formulation of methods to combat oxidative degradation in jet fuel.
