Fluoroalkoxy-functional imidazol-2-ylidene tridentate ligands are described.  The ligand architecture employed is inspired by the Martin-tridentate ligand and similarly utilizes two highly electronegative pendant fluoroalkoxy groups.  The resulting chelates from this new ligand system possess a 6,5,6-ring fusion geometry compared to the 5,6,5-ring fusion that forms for chelates of the Martin tridentate ligand.  The inclusion of the central carbene (imidazole-2-ylidene) coordination site facilitates the easy formation of transition metal complexes in contrast to the Martin-tridentate ligand for which such metal complexes appear unknown. Pendant fluoroalkoxy groups of this new ligand are well-suited to a variety of main-group elements. Hence, representative coordination chemistry for both main-group and transition elements can be described, along with synthetic, structural, chemical, and spectroscopic properties of interesting intermediates leading up to the final chelates.
