Iron complexes have recently provoked a renaissance in metal-mediated homogeneous catalysis. Numerous applications of Fe-based systems in cross-couplings, C-O and C-N bond formation reactions and oxidation catalysis (amongst others) have clearly demonstrated the usefulness of Fe in catalysis science. We have recently launched a new program focusing on tripodal ligand systems having a NO3 donor set. Upon incorporation of Fe(III) ions, the metal center is surrounded by the NO3 ligand with the oxygen donors in the equatorial plane of a tbp arrangement and the N-donor in one of the apical positions. Interestingly, these systems show, depending on the nature of the substitution, the tendency to form dimeric structures by virtue of bridging phenoxides. The influence of this dimer (as opposed to mononuclear species) has been investigated in detail, and also examined in catalytic applications.
