Organometallic compounds of Mn, Fe, and Co containing the 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr) ligands have been prepared and characterized. The aggregation states of the compounds are sensitive to the steric requirements of the carbene ligand resulting in both monomeric and dimeric structures. Several alkyl complexes have been isolated and characterized, some displaying unique geometries. The preparation and reactivity of the compounds, as well as their relevance to cross-coupling catalysis will be discussed.
