Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are an attractive low cost alternative to costly silicon photovoltaics for solar harvesting applications. Porphyrin derivatives represent one type of chromophore that has been used for DSSC construction due to their strong absorptivities, however most porphyrins display only weak absorbances past 600 nm, complicating photon harvesting at the low energy end of the visible spectrum. In addressing this shortcoming, we have developed a new class of porphyrinoid called the phlorin. These architectures display photophysical properties that are favorable for use in DSSCs, including a wide spectral breadth across the UV-vis absorption spectrum along with novel multielectron redox properties. The synthesis, photophysical and redox properties of these novel porphyrinoids will be presented.
