Biodegradable polymers have had success with applications in biotechnology and bioengineering.   However, due to mechanical instabilities and biological incompatibilities, only a few biodegradable polymers have been able to be used.  A biocompatible and biodegradable polymer could have potential in tissue engineering and drug delivery.  The goal of this research is to design xylitol based biodegradable elastomers to be used as scaffolds in tissue engineering.  The elastomers are prepared by reacting xylitol with acidic monomers including sebacic acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acid to form covalently crosslinked, three-dimensional networks.  Characterization was carried out using NMR, FTIR, TGA, and DSC.
