IASI is a hyperspectral infrared sounder which measures the terrestrial outgoing radiation in the range 645-2760 cm-1 . It is designed for operational weather forecasting (temperature and humidity profiles) and atmospheric chemistry (e.g., CO, O3). While it is only 5 years in orbit, it has found numerous unexpected applications outside the original mission goals.In this talk we give an overview of infrared remote sensing of  coarse mode aerosols and aerosol precursors (NH3 and SO2) with IASI.
