We have shown [1] that large deviations of the dynamical activity can be used to identify novel phase transitions between active (fluid) and inactive (glassy states).  In this presentation, we discuss recent results concerning the nature of the inactive states, as well as calculations on model systems that show how these results can be interpreted within different theories of the glass transition.  In particular we show that both kinetically constrained models and spin glass models support active-inactive phase transitions, and we discuss the nature of the amorphous order in the inactive phase.[1] LO Hedges, RL Jack, JP Garrahan and D Chandler, Science 323, 1309 (2009).
