Membrane filtration technology has been studied extensively, because of its wide range of applications, including separation, purification and fractionation process. The separation ability is determined by the properties of the membrane, such as hydrophilicity, membrane material and surface charge, membrane thickness, pore size and operating conditions. Althoudh various researches have been suggested to inhibit the fouling phenomenon, the major challenge to this technology is membrane fouling problem by proteins and other biomolecules in the feed stream.We describe herein the fabrication of a ultrafiltration membrane using ethyl cellulose-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (EC-g-PEG). 1H-NMR and ATR-IR showed the presence of PEG side-chain. The morphology and surface property of membranes were investigated by contact angle measurements from air captive bubble in water and SEM. A EC-g-PEG membrane was then compared with a EC membrane for membrane properties such as pure water permeability, surface charge and fouling resistance.
