Supercapacitors, one of the most promising energy devices, have attracted significant interest for use in electric vehicles and portable electronic devices due to their large power densities and long cycle stabilities. The mechanisms of energy storage for supercapacitors are based on either electrical double-layer capacitance or pseudocapacitance. The electrical double-layer capacitance results from a separation of charges at the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte, while pseudocapacitance results from faradic redox reactions at the surface of the electrode materials. Recently, electrical double-layer capacitance-based materials with pseudocapacitive effects have been reported. The incorporation of heteroatoms into carbon materials has brought about considerable improvement in specific capacitance due to heteroatoms inducing pseudocapacitive behavior, and improvements in the polar properties of carbon materials. In this study, we prepared nitrogen-enriched carbon nanofibers by carbonization for use in supercapacitors from a mixture of bacterial cellulose, sustainable natural polymer, and urea, and their characteristics and electrochemical performances were investigated.
