I entered Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa in 1944 as an Applied Art major, but after this initial 'false start', I quickly changed my major to chemistry.  My experience in 1947 as an undergraduate research assistant in nuclear chemistry in the Institute for Atomic Research Institute convinced me that I wanted to pursue a career in nuclear chemistry. After receiving my B. S. in chemistry in 1948, I entered graduate school in inorganic (nuclear chemistry) there and received my Ph. D. in physical (nuclear) chemistry in December 1951 and began my career in nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry.  Now, from the perspective of more than 60 years later, I will reflect on changes in these fields as well as on the changing status of women.
