Gynostemma pentaphyllum has been traditionally used in food, tea, and folk medicines for its potential health properties. Flavonoids and saponins are considered as major health components. This research was performed to develop an effective method for discrimination and quality evaluation of G. pentaphyllum and its derived nutraceutical and food products. To obtain chemical profile of active constituents in G. pentaphyllum of different genotypes (diploid and tetraploid) and different parts (leaf and whole-plant) of plants, two fingerprinting approaches were developed by means of HPLC-DAD-MS and FI(flow-injection)-MS to analyze flavonoids and saponins, respectively. The results showed that chemical profiling combined with chemometric approaches including PCA and PLS-DA analysis may serve as an effective way for Qc/QA of commercial G. pentaphyllum products.
