We introduce a colorimetric method that can identify opportunistic human pathogenic microorganisms at clinically relevant concentrations in liquid media during cell culture. The cell culture bottle is composed of a growth chamber interfaced to a colorimetric sensor array (CSA). The CSA comprises a series of chemoresponsive dyes deposited on a substrate in a prearranged pattern. The combination of dyes has a distinct response to microbial metabolic by-products. This response was monitored during culturing to yield reproducible colorimetric time response curves that identify the strain of bacteria within the bottle. Simple analysis of the response curves provides 100% correct classification of each bacterial strain in less than 24 h
