This research focuses on the design and characterization of enrichment polymer layer systems that can trap chemical vapors to facilitate detection.  Specifically, the main goal of this work is to construct a virtually universal enrichment layer capable of absorbing a wide range of chemicals in the gas phase where they can be detected using FT-IR spectroscopy.  Two distinct nanoscale layered enrichment systems were synthesized via the �grafting to� approach.  Polymers utilized were poly(gylcidyl methacrylate), poly(acrylic acid), 60% epoxidized polybutadiene, and poly(4-vinyl pyridine).  The polymer layered systems were characterized by atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry and infrared spectroscopy.  Studies of individual substances and mixtures of analytes were conducted along with parameters of the system.  It was found that the polymer layer systems designed offer increase in detection capabilities of FT-IR waveguides substantially.
