Through my graduate and post-doctoral research in chemistry and materials science and engineering, I developed expertise in nano-scale materials for environmental applications with emphases on gas separation and carbon capture, utilization and storage.My PhD work focused on the design and tuning of reactive carbon-based adsorbents for the gas separation of small molecules, with identification of the effect of the adsorbents' physical and chemical features. Part of this research led to the development of metal-organic framework/graphite oxide composites exhibiting among the best ammonia adsorption capacities reported so far (patented work). My post-doctoral research entails the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of nano-scale inorganic-organic hybrid materials for CO2 capture/conversion and H2 production from biomass. I plan to focus my academic career on the development of nanoscale and waste-derived materials in the crosslinking areas of water and energy sustainability.
