The quinolone quorum sensing system of communication is a common form of communication shared by both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia species. We have shown that modifications made during the initial biosynthesis of the quinolone ring serve to produce molecules that are species specific and limit or prevent quorum sensing cross-talk. We also show that post ring-forming tailoring reactions serve not only as species-specific modifications but to sabotage or high-jack Burkholderia specific quinolone molecules. Additionally in P. aeruginosa hydroxylation provides a method to upregulate or mediate the conversion of attenuated N-oxide to more active quinolone sensing molecules.
