Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have found important applications in surface engineering, sensing and nano  fabrication. We show that the presence of DNA origami completely inhibits the growth of silane SAM on SiO2. Arbitrary-shaped patterns can be incorporated into the silane SAM with ~30 nm resolution.
