In order to understand how the mobility of TiO2 nanoparticles is influenced by the clay minerals in a soil environment, in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe the interactions of swelling clays with TiO2 nanoparticles. By measuring the swelling changes in individual quasi-crystals of a clay mineral which were exposed to aqueous suspensions of TiO2 nanoparticles of various charges and sizes, the degree to which different types of nanoparticles may be incorporated into the interlayer regions of clay minerals was determined. This behavior on the nanoscale was correlated with mobility in a soil environment in a series of column experiments.
