In recent years, emerging contaminants (ECs) have been found in treated municipal wastewater. Most of these ECs have xenobiotic, endocrine disrupting, persistent and other non-desirable properties. Therefore, ECs should be removed prior to water discharge into the environment. Photocatalytic ozonation, i.e. the combination of photocatalytic oxidation and ozone, has demonstrated to efficiently remove this kind of pollutants. The aim of this work was to evaluate the kinetics of photocatalytic ozonation of four pharmaceutical compounds (carbamazepine, flumequine, metoprolol and ibuprofen) in the presence of TiO2-P25 suspensions under black light radiation using an annular photoreactor. This was equipped with an external jacket for actinometrical measurements to determine the light transmission through the photocatalyst suspension during the reaction time. Ultrapure water and a MWWTP effluent were used as aqueous matrix. The calculated kinetic constants were compared with those of photocatalytic oxidation to establish the degree of synergism observed in the system ozone/TiO2/radiation.
