Geologic storage of carbon dioxide (GSC) depends on low permeability caprocks to prevent upward migration of buoyant supercritical CO2 (scCO2). Injection of scCO2 will displace formation water, and the pore space adjacent to overlying caprocks could eventually be dominated by dry to water-saturated scCO2. In situ observations of GSC relevant mineral-water-scCO2 conditions were lacking molecular technologies to observe formation of relevant phases and states. Recent technical advances by the authors have developed three novel high-pressure techniques: magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HP-MAS-NMR), infrared spectroscopy (HP-IR) and X-ray diffraction (HP-XRD). Each now routinely allows molecular observations well above 73 bar and in temperature ranges from 35-70�C. In situ 13C-HP-MAS-NMR studies of reaction products and intermediates with several mineral systems associated with GSC will be shown, including results from interactions with clay minerals. Complementary data from HP-IR and HP-XRD will also be presented.
