We recently discovered that the lifetime of a AuCl3 catalyst could be greatly increased by the addition of TEMPO and/or CuCl2 . A three component coupling reaction between piperidine, phenylacetylene, and benzaldehyde was studied at molar loadings of Au of 0.1, 1.0, and 5.0%.  Surprisingly, catalytic amounts of CuCl2 led to extended lifetimes of the Au catalyst at the lowest loadings.  The mechanism and explanation will be discussed.
