Most studies of oxidation reactions of organic aerosol are undertaken under dry conditions. However, the oxidation of mixed organic/inorganic aerosol can occur with a deliquesced or effloresced inorganic seed and the reaction rate, product branching and phase behaviour are likely to be dependent on the relative humidity (RH). Using the oleic acid/sodium chloride/water system as a benchmark system for study with aerosol optical tweezers, we will consider the phase behaviour and hygroscopicity of this mixed component aerosol prior to and post oxidation by ozone. In particular, the independent properties of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic phase domains in a single particle will be explored. The product branching and oxidation kinetics of this insoluble organic will be compared with water soluble maleic acid. We will also consider the influence of a highly viscous or glassy organic matrix on the reaction kinetics and the subsequent hygroscopic growth of the particle at elevated RH.
