Macrocycles are useful precursors to novel liquid crystals, porous solids, and tubular assemblies. Often large organic macrocycles are difficult to obtain, but can be easily accessed using reversible reactions. By using these reactions (e.g., Schiff base condensation), it is possible to construct large, well-defined macrocycles in high yield. In this presentation, I will describe our recent efforts to construct new shape-persistent macrocycles and studies of their supramolecular assembly, especially with the goal of constructing new porous materials.
