This presentation will highlight recent work from our labs on the design, synthesis, and utilization of functional metal-organic framework materials. Particular attention will be given to the synthesis of functional MOFs that cannot be accessed solely via conventional solvothermal synthesis techniques. The functional focus will chiefly be on chemical separations and/or selective catalysis. Potential examples are MOFs: a) showing 'emergent behavior' that can lead to exceptionally high selectivities for alkane/alkene separation at practical pressures, and b) presenting highly coordinatively unsaturated metal sites or pairs of metal sites capable of individual or cooperative catalytic behavior.
