In order to improve the stability and solubility of iron-sulfur clusters in aqueous or partially aqueous media in the absence of excess terminal thiolate ligands, Fe4S4 clusters derived from highly hydrophilic dithiolate derivatives of alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin have been examined. Methods of generation in solution are presented together with spectroscopic and reactivity data demonstrating the presence of the cubane core geometry. Clusters exhibit diastereotopic methylene 1H NMR signals, contact-shifted spectra, MCD spectra, and redox behavior. Stability in various aqueous/organic media are reported and compared with an earlier literature report. Related results for another cluster derived from a potentially chelating organic dithiolate are reported and discussed.
